Blog entries don't burn

My all-time favorite novel is Mikhail Bulgakov's Master and Margarita, a wild and wonderful look at life through the Devil's escapades in Stalin's Moscow, and I was delighted to see it named as an indispensable accessory on Superfantastic Island over at Shangri Law

Since my photos are in storage I won't post my pictures of Bulgakov's apartment and M & M landmarks, nor will I regale you with stories about the formative influence this book had on me back when I, like the Shangri Lawvians, was a student at Yale Law (except back then it was known as The New School in Connecticut in Need of a Naming Gift).

However, I will show you M & M inspired jewelry!

Bulgakov ring

The above is an homage to Bulgakov's masterpiece and its spiritual influences, from Jewish mysticism and Goethe (hence the Hebrew version of the epigram that opens M & M) to a pre-Mill Valley fusion of the occult, Christian and Hindu symbolism.  The designer gives a brief overview of his inspiration here -- and keep reading Blingdom for lots more to come on triangles, diamonds and the three forces of life.

EXTRA:  A new film adaptation has been all the rage in Russia, and I've just obtained a copy.  From the little I've seen it's clear the Wizard of Oz was an influence, although the W of O didn't have quite as much naked dancing.  As soon as I get through all ten episodes I'll write about it on Trexfiles.  For now, though, I'll just lift my coffee mug and joyfully drink . . . to existence!

La Retrosessuale is so grateful to the Jeff for his illuminating comment and link! The Blingakov ring -- alas -- does not say "Manuscripts don't burn," but something similar: "A man and his faith will live on." This is of little consequence to La Retrosessuale, though, who is determined to purchase this Bulgakovian bauble someday instead of a Yale Law School class of 200* ring!
Madonna mia! Where is my manners? I should have said Professore Trexler and not the Jeff! La Retrosessuale shall no longer take thy name in vain.
That's OK--the Jeff is fine! "Blingakov"--brilliant, absolutely brilliant, well reflecting the shiny brightness that is Shangri Law. And thanks for your Hebrew translation of the foreground text! I was referring to the background circle, which is (ostensibly) taken from the Goethe epigram that opens the book. I didn't check out how well the designer's Hebrew translation actually parses; having seen lots of odd but well meaning Latin & Greek phrases on bling & clothes in my day, I tend to give designers a lot of slack. In any case, here's what the designer--obviously a big M & M fan--was aiming for, in his own words, from http://www.ka-gold-jewelry.com/p-products/bolgakov-ring-gold.php: The ring has a triangle with three diamonds that represent the three forces in the creation. The triangle also represents the Delta which is the first letter in the devil name. The triangle appears on the cigarette box that the devil uses on the start of the book. The M Represent the master. The ring should remind the wearer that he is the creator of his own reality. On the ring engraved in Hebrew "Each will live in his belief." Around the ring engraved in Hebrew a sentence cited in the book from Faust: "who are you, then? I am part of that power which eternally wills evil and eternally works good."
I think you have done such a nice with your blog. Best of luck to ya TajaC
